ST.GEORGE MOTOR BOAT CLUB
GOLF CLUB
Golf Club originated in 1955 by a number of Club members, these members formed a committee and approached the Board with the view to initiating a Golf Club within the main Club. The Board did not seem to be very interested at first, but after a few months of negotiations, the Board relented and in 1956 the first club within the club was given permission to activate.
The Golf Club was believed to be the first social club within a licensed Club in Sydney and could also have been the first in Australia. Some of the minutes of the early meetings were interesting, one motion was all players being driven to the course were required to pay the car owner a minimum of 2/- (20cents)"Another was that" the winner of the days event be provided with a free lesson at the Clubs expense.
Membership back in those days grew to some seventy odd players, with fourty hitting off at each game.Courses played on then were, Greenlands, Studley Park, Penrith, Glenmore and Illawarra. Some of our earlier Members were very good players,Fred Charters being Club Champion Many times, Bill Dale an outstanding player played par golf effortlessly.
The Club held numerous social events and played an annual competition with the St.George Sailing Club. The present day Membership stands at forty three, a little down on our previous numbers. We have vacancies for Members and visitors are more than welcome. Any persons wishing more information can contact our Chairman John Anderson on mob.ph, 0407 529249.
